Vehicular networking has become a significant research area due to its specific features and standardization regarding efficient traffic management, road safety and infotainment. Vehicles are expected to carry communication systems, on board computing facilities, storage and increased sensing power. Hence, several technologies have been deployed to maintain and promote Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). To utilize street and highway communication, the idea of involving Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANET) was inspired.
The project work focusses particularly on the following research questions:
  • What are the suitable metrics that can be extracted at MAC layer for a routing decisions?
  • What will be the category of the protocol (proactive, reactive, geographical)?
  • How can the high mobility of the nodes be incorporated in the model?
  • What will be information dissemination mechanism for the routing protocol?
  • What are the suitable topologies for the testing?
  • Does routing require metrics other than MAC ones?
A mathematic model will be design and simulated. For evaluation of the proposed protocol, several scenario environments will be implemented:
  • Urban areas
  • Rural areas
  • Highway scenarios
  • Peak hour scenarios
Within the scenarios, the parameters throughput, delay, jitter, packet loss and channel access overheads will be analyzed subject to varying simulation parameters such as density, speed, inter-vehicle distance.
